Stories of Action and Impact: A Look at VMware’s 2022 ESG Report

VMware has always been vocal about our commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), making it a part of everything we do, from business strategy to technology. In 2020, we announced an ambitious 2030 Agenda — a decade-long commitment to sustainability, equity, and trust. Equally important, we pledged to be transparent about our results along the way.

To those ends, I’m pleased to share some highlights from our 2022 ESG Report. The theme of this year’s report is “Accelerate into Action.” And what you’ll find in the pages of this year’s report are not only plans and targets to be achieved by some future date, but more importantly stories of how VMware is taking action today, and making an impact along the way.

This annual report is our vehicle for transparency. We want to ensure that our stakeholders — employees, customers, suppliers, investors, and the community at large — can see our progress and hold us accountable for our commitments. Any company can give lip service to these goals. It’s actions and results that truly define us.

We want to ensure that our stakeholders — employees, customers, suppliers, investors, and the community at large — can see our progress and hold us accountable for our commitments.

The 2022 ESG report details our vision, strategy, and progress towards our 2030 Agenda goals. It highlights customer case studies, data aligned to leading ESG frameworks, and our progress since last year.

Nicola Acutt, VMware’s VP of ESG, shares far more detail about the report findings and figures in her recent blog. But I wanted to shine a spotlight on some things I felt were particularly important.

  • Once again, we were certified as a CarbonNeutral Company. We’ve worn this badge proudly since 2018. We also powered our operations at our global facilities and co-located datacenters with 100% renewable energy (as we have since 2019)
  • We added 30 partners to our Zero Carbon Committed program, including Google, Amazon Web Services, Oracle, and IBM
  • We launched Disaster Recovery as a Service, which allows companies to recover data and applications with minimal infrastructure footprint
  • We joined the Green Software Foundation

Our progress with our equity initiatives was just as impressive, including:

  • Achieving our fifth 100% score on the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index
  • Signing the Business Coalition for the Equality Act to advocate for providing the same basic protections to LGBTQ people as are provided to other protected groups under federal law
  • Being recognized on the DEI Disability Equality Index’s 2021 Best Places to Work

In our efforts to earn the trust of our employees, customers, partners, and the industry at large, we were:

  • Ranked fourth in Software and Telecommunications category by Newsweek’s inaugural list of America’s Most Trusted Companies
  • Awarded industry-first AAA Rating for Network Detection & Response by SE Labs
  • Recognized with Best Network Detection and Response Award from SE Labs
  • Named as a Leader in Endpoint Security Software as a Service by Forrester
  • Launched the VMware Responsible Sourcing™ program to prioritize sustainability, diversity, and accessibility in our supply chain

We also received a number of awards and recognitions, including:

  • America’s Most JUST Companies
  • America’s Most Responsible Companies
  • America’s Most Trusted Companies
  • Barron’s 100 Most Sustainable Companies
  • Forbes’ Best Employers for Women
  • Glassdoor’s Best Places to Work

I’ve purposely left out much of the data and many of the honors given, so you can discover them as you flip through the beautifully designed report. Congrats to our team of ESG ninjas for an excellent publication and to all our colleagues around the world who contributed to our ESG progress. Suffice it to say, I’m very, very proud of this team and of VMware.

We’ll also be talking a lot about ESG and sustainable product innovations this month at VMware Explore. I highly recommend you check out the VMware Explore ESG Playlist to learn more and register today.

Best,

Kit
