Top 6 Next-Gen Trends Sessions to Attend at VMworld Europe

The Next-Gen Trends: Office of The CTO is a track you don’t want to miss at this year’s VMworld Europe conference, taking place Nov. 5-8 in Barcelona, Spain.

VMware’s Office of the CTO is dedicated to looking over the horizon – exploring and identifying disruptive technology trends to shape new solutions that will impact the future. Join us for these forward-looking technology sessions on AI, blockchain, quantum computing and more to help you plan and evolve your IT strategies over the next decade. You’ll learn about VMware’s technology direction, research, innovation, open source, and sustainability efforts through sessions presented by VMware’s technology leaders within research and development and field organizations.

VMworld may still be a few weeks out, but it’s never too early to start planning which sessions to attend. Here are six notable sessions from our emerging technology track we highly recommend:

   1- Tech-Lash: Addressing the Public’s Concern about Tech [CTO3650BE] – Tue., 06 November, 14:00

There is rising concern out there about some of the unintended consequences of big data and artificial intelligence (AI), with growing narratives related to jobs, security, privacy, fake news, the lack of AI transparency, and so on. Although the pessimists are in ascension, David is an optimist. This talk will discuss how these technologies can continue to be both a force for good and a positive factor in addressing enterprise challenges. That doesn’t mean sweeping concerns under the rug. Instead, let’s identify ways to confront these unintended effects of innovation head-on and do what we do best; i.e., turn them into opportunities for new and better innovations for the future.

Speaker: David Tennenhouse, SVP and Chief Research Officer, VMware

   2- An Introduction to VMware’s Blockchain [CTO3584BE] – Tue., 06 November, 15:30

You’ve heard about it but want to really know what is VMware’s blockchain solution. This session will take you from knowing nothing about VMware’s solution to a deep dive on how it works and what it was designed to do, as well as what it wasn’t designed to do. If you are interested in blockchain or have a real project, then this session is your starting point.

Speaker: Mike DiPetrillo, Sr. Director, VMware

3- VMware CTO Panel: What’s Over the Horizon? [CTO3496PE] Tue., 06 November, 17:00

VMware CTOs spend significant time assessing emerging technology trends, taking a practical look at their potential impacts and opportunities for VMware. This session explores emerging areas, inclusive of edge, the Internet of things, artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML), SD-WAN and network service mesh, distributed data management, and more. There will also be ample time for you to have your most pressing questions answered.

  • Ray O’Farrell, EVP and Chief Technology Officer, VMware
  • Christos Karamanolis, Fellow and CTO Storage & Availability, VMware
  • Chris Wolf, VP and CTO, Global Field and Industry, VMware
  • Shawn Bass, VP and CTO End User Computing, VMware

4- Evolution of the Microgrid: The Largest Solar Deployment in Palo Alto [CTO2657BE] – Wed., 07 November, 15:30

Microgrids are small, self-balancing networks that have the ability to fractally break apart from the larger energy grid for autonomous operation and then seamlessly recombine to function as part of the whole on demand. Community microgrids prove that local renewables provide a reliable and cost-effective foundation for a modern electric grid and deliver an unparalleled trifecta of economic, environmental, and resilience benefits to communities. Similar to how virtualization enables radical efficiency, elasticity, and scalability of cloud, community microgrids have the potential to enable the clean electric grid of the future! Learn how VMware plans to turn our main campus into the largest community microgrid in Palo Alto, California: The Heart of Silicon Valley!

  • Rob Glanzman, Sr. Director, Xplorer Group, VMware
  • Nicola Acutt, VP, Sustainability Strategy, VMware

   5- Inside the VMware Innovation Engine [CTO1901BE] – Thu., 08 November, 09:00

VMware was named the seventh-most innovative company in enterprise in the world by Fast Company. But how has VMware kept innovating for the past 20 years? What does VMware think about sustaining and disruptive innovations? What is its secret sauce? What are the lessons learned? This session is a unique chance for you to look behind the VMware innovation curtain and see how VMware nurtures innovation. Look at the processes that VMware has put in place over time to ensure that innovation is at the core of its EPIC2 culture. Find out about some specific projects that initiated from the VMware internal innovation labs. Hear about key lessons learned on how to best foster internal innovation: what works and what does not.

  • Michael Gandy, Director, Xplorer Group, VMware
  • Joel Leichnetz, Director, Xplorer Group, VMware

6- Quantum Supremacy: Basics, Outlook and Security Implications [CTO1875BE] – Thu., 08 November, 13:30

The race to realize quantum computers has received considerable attention in the media as companies and governments around the world have poured investment capital into technology development. In this session, you will hear about the current outlook on quantum computing and what it will likely mean for enterprise computing in the future. Included in the discussion will be a quick review of quantum computing concepts, comments on development hurdles and overall outlook, killer apps under development by researchers, and implications to widely used security (cryptography) standards. You will also find out about VMware’s initiatives addressing security readiness.
