OCTO White Papers

  • May 16, 2022:  Secure Networking for Multi-Tenant High-Performance Computing and Machine Learning. In this paper, we leverage VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) and one of its core components, NSX-T Data Center, for HPC workloads. We present a multi-tenant networking architecture and evaluate the performance of HPC applications paired with different NSX-T features, including micro-segmentation with distributed firewall (DFW), encapsulation with GENEVE Overlay, and Enhanced Data Path/Network Stack (ENS). Finally, we offer a list of best practices.
  • April, 2022: Secure Private Clouds for HPC: Technical University of Denmark’s approach to virtualizing HPC supercomputing for life science and healthcare research. In healthcare, time is of the essence. The research that advances healthcare must also move fast—while still preserving the privacy of patients’ sensitive medical data. Technical University of Denmark (DTU) took an innovative approach to virtualize and use modern cloud technologies to implement a secure High-Performance Computing (HPC) environment tailored specifically for health and life science research. The university achieved its security goals and operational requirements by leveraging VMware infrastructure.
  • August, 2021: Carbon Impact of the Future of Work  —  The Environmental Implications of Remote Working. As part of our 2020 Greenhouse Gas Inventory, we assessed — for the first time — the carbon impact of VMware employees working from home. This paper outlines the custom methodology we developed to estimate home-office emissions and our recommendations for a hybrid methodology required to assess the impact of globally distributed, flexible workforce models in the future.
  • August, 2021: A Best-in-Class Data Analytics Platform Built on a VMware Private Cloud. Like most large enterprises, VMware needed to get more value out of its data by removing data silos and combining disparate data sources into a centralized and governed big-data system. After spending years designing, building, operating, and evangelizing such an analytical system, we came to believe that operating a private cloud based on a VMware stack and using OSS is the technological approach that gives agility at a good price.
  • May, 2021: Office of the CTO Perspective: Cloud Distributed Application Runtime – An Emerging Layer for Multi-Cloud Application Services Fabric Cloud Distributed Application Runtime. A cloud runtime is a concept of common application services connectivity with various resiliency and geographic manageability functions. The concept begins with a premise: regardless of where your application runs, the cloud runtime must provide a set of OSI Layer 7 application platform resiliency and manageability services that improve the overall quality of service — and ultimately — the user experience.
  • May, 2021: A Holistic Approach to COVID-19 Tracing and Vaccine Impact Using Distributed Ledgers, Edge Computing & 5G. This paper looks at how emerging technologies — such as distributed ledgers, edge computing, and 5G — can come together to provide viable solutions. It includes a detailed example of tracing airline travelers within a country and across the world and tracing shop visitors, especially those who were tested COVID-19 positive or those who may have been exposed to COVID-19.
  • April, 2021: Ransomware: Defense in Depth with VMware. Cyberattacks increased significantly in 2020, and ransomware is one of the most recurring and devastating attacks. In this white paper, VMware documents solutions by incorporating the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) controls specific to protect, detect, and respond functions contained in the NIST Cybersecurity Framework.
  • April, 2021The Role of Cloud Computing and Data Centres in Achieving Power Sector Emissions Reductions in Europe. Aurora Energy Research white paper, sponsored by VMware. This report demonstrates how VMware’s transformative software can enable partners to reduce their carbon emissions and intends to make recommendations to policymakers on how they can incentivize sustainable digital transformations as they work towards climate change and green-policy goals.
